What if it is not a confidence problem?
I asked myself that question for years before I had the language for it, and I want to walk you through what I have learned since.
I have seen this play out many times before. You are doing everything right, following the plan and the strategies you’ve built. The effort is still there and yet somehow, the growth has flattened. Nothing is moving the way it used to and it starts to feel like something must be wrong with you.
If you have been there, or you are there right now, I want to offer you a different way to think about it.
That stuck feeling rarely shows up because we lack discipline or grit. Most of the high achievers I work with have already proven they have plenty of both. It usually shows up because we have outgrown the version of ourselves who built what we have. And no one ever told us that this is actually a sign of arrival, not a sign of failure.
Some of us have been programmed to believe that this moment is a confidence issue. So we try to think more positively, push a little harder, believe in ourselves a little more, and white knuckle our way through it. But confidence was never the real barrier.
Visibility can feel unsafe. Success can quietly threaten our sense of belonging. Growth can trigger a kind of internal resistance that has nothing to do with what we are capable of and everything to do with an old operating system, one that was built for a different season of our life. That system was shaped by the conditioning we grew up with, by the roles we played in our families, and by what our nervous system learned was safe to want or ask for. None of that is a personal flaw. It is simply the architecture many of us inherited, and the good news is, it can be updated.
This is why I do not coach the same way I used to. I don’t look at every situation like it is a ladder we need to climb harder. I think of it more like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. It is not always about doing more. It is often about becoming more. It is about evolving and growing into someone who is ready for what comes next. Who knows that their next level of income, leadership, or impact is simply a natural expression of who they already are.
When the identity shifts, the actions that once felt impossible start to feel obvious. Life reorganizes itself around who you have become, instead of around a longer list of things you still have to accomplish.
So if this is landing for you today, here are a few questions I would love for you to sit with, not as another task on your list, but as an honest check in with yourself.
What is trying to emerge in you right now that you have not yet given yourself permission to want?
Where have you been playing a role that was built for an earlier version of your life or your business?
What would it look like to build the boundaries and the support that let this next version of you actually stay?
That last one matters more than people realize. An identity shift without the structure to support it tends to collapse. Real change asks for new skills, clearer boundaries, more capacity, and the right people around you. It is never just the insight. It is the insight, followed by a new way of showing up, held in place by real structure.
So if you are standing at your own edge right now, wondering whether to quit, I want to leave you with this instead. You are not failing, you are learning. You are growing and evolving. And possibly between one identity and the next, and that in between space feels disorienting because it is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. Stretch you.
You do not need to push harder to get there. You need to become the version of you who already belongs there.
If any of this is landing for you and you would like to talk more about it, I would love to connect. You can reach out anytime to schedule a discovery session with me, and we can talk through what this next version of you might look like. https://calendly.com/annagibbs/discovery-session
And if you want to go even deeper into this work, my upcoming book, Getting Back to You, explores this and so much more. You can learn all about it at https://gettingbacktoyoubook.com/
