The Moment Between
You know that space we find ourselves in sometimes? The inbetween, where we can see what’s possible, but we haven’t fully stepped into it yet.
It’s not that we don’t know what we want and it’s certainly not that we’re incapable. It’s that we’re standing in the middle of a decision. Stay where things are familiar… or move toward something that feels bigger, but uncertain.
I’ve been there more than once.
Where part of me could clearly see the next version of my life, my work, or even who I was becoming. While another part of me felt very comfortable staying exactly where I was. And that was appealing only not because it was better, but because it was known. Maybe even safe.
But comfortable and safe won’t allow the next version of you to take shape.
And I get it, there’s a certain ease in where we are because we’ve already figured it out and know how to operate there. We know what to expect. We know who we are in that space.
And then there’s the other side.
The part of you that knows there’s more. You can feel the misalignment; you just don’t call it that. But something is off. And something is calling you.
It is the undeniable feeling that your growth is calling. You can see the possibilities.
But it requires something from you. It is not enough to just think about it or imagine what your life could look like out there. It requires something much more specific. It requires you to take action. And if I’m being honest, that’s where most people hesitate.
Because once you move, it becomes real.
I’ve learned that staying in the idea of something without taking steps toward it can quietly turn into watching your life instead of living it. You start to see other people pursuing their dreams and maybe even doing the things you’ve thought about doing. You tell yourself you’ll get there “eventually.” That it’s all about timing. But eventually, that gap between where you are and where you want to be starts to feel bigger than it actually is.
Movement doesn’t have to mean a massive leap. It could be one small step at a time. I think the first step is to get honest about what you want. Then create a plan that brings it closer. Nothing about this has to be perfect either. You won’t get to the other side of the decision in one big leap so just keep it real. But keep it focused on the vision.
Because the truth is, there will always be unknowns. There will always be moments that feel uncomfortable. But avoiding that discomfort doesn’t keep you safe. It just keeps you in the same place.
If you’re feeling stuck right now, it may not be confusion. It might just be that you’ve outgrown where you are. You could be standing at the point where a decision needs to be made. You probably don’t need more time to think about it.
You need to decide if you’re going to move toward it.
A few questions to sit with:
- Are you where you are because it’s right for you… or because it’s familiar?
- How much do you actually want the thing you keep thinking about?
- What’s just beyond your comfort zone that could change things for you?
- Are you seeing your future clearly… or just imagining it from a distance?
- What would it look like to take one real step toward it this week?
