There Was a Time When I Thought Success Required Sacrifice β And I No Longer Believe Thatβs True
There was a time when I truly believed that if I wanted to be successful, I had to give something up — my time, my energy, my rest, sometimes even parts of myself.
I thought that was just how it worked. Hustle harder. Push through. Figure it out later.
And for a while, that belief looked like success. But it didn’t always feel like it.
Over time, I started to notice something: the more I normalized sacrifice, the more disconnected and exhausted I felt. I was getting things done, but I wasn’t always enjoying the life I was building.
That’s when I began to question the story I had been telling myself.
What if success doesn’t require sacrifice… but alignment?
What if growth doesn’t demand burnout… but intention?
What if leadership isn’t about doing more… but choosing better?
Here’s the distinction that changed everything for me:
Sacrifice feels heavy.
Choice feels grounded.
Sacrifice says, “I have to.”
Choice says, “I choose to.”
When I started leading and living from choice instead of sacrifice, things shifted. I didn’t lose my ambition or lower my standards — I simply stopped abandoning myself in the process.
Today, success looks like meaningful work, healthy boundaries, and a life that actually feels good to live — not just impressive to talk about.
If you’ve been carrying the belief that success requires sacrifice, maybe this is your permission slip to think differently.
There was a time when I believed that story.
I no longer do.
And you don’t have to either.
