How I’m Balancing a Full December With Planning for a Powerful New Year

Lately, I’ve been living in two worlds at once — and honestly, it’s not always easy.

One part of me is in full-on “goal setting, planning-for-an-incredible-New-Year” mode. You know me: fresh ideas, new goals, color-coded calendars, and that spark of energy that comes from imagining what new opportunities lie around the corner from December 31st.

But at the very same time…

I’m decorating my home, baking cookies, scheduling holiday get-togethers, wrapping too many gifts (is that even a thing?), and leaning into the rituals that make December feel so warm and grounded.

And here’s what I’ve realized:

Fulfillment doesn’t come from choosing one or the other. It comes from honoring both.

December is probably THE busiest month of the year for most of us. This month invites us to slow down, but it also gives us the clarity and self-awareness that only reflection can bring. It’s a soft and magical time of year — but it’s also a powerful one if we let it be.

So I’m doing something different this year:
I’m allowing myself to be present and productive… festive and focused… joyful and intentional.
Not perfectly — just honestly.

And if you’re trying to find that same balance, here are a few things helping me right now:

  1. Batch Your Focus: Productivity Time vs. Holiday Time

To keep my sanity (and my peace) I time block. And I time block my calendar not just in December but every month. However, time blocking is especially important in this month when we want time to be both focused and festive. So here is what you can do:

  • Set up time blocks for planning (reviewing the year, setting goals, mapping out January)

  • Create time blocks for productivity (finishing work projects with intention)

  • Blocks for holiday life (shopping, cooking, events, time with family)

When everything has a place, it doesn’t feel like everything is happening at once. This reduces mental clutter and helps me feel more present in each area, instead of feeling tugged in all directions.

  1. Protect Small Pockets of Peace

This month gets busy quickly. Before you know it, every hour is spoken for - especially if you are time blocking!

So I make sure to also carve out small moments that are just for me — early morning journaling, five minutes of deep breathing, a walk outside without my phone.

These tiny rituals keep me centered and remind me of who I want to be going into the new year.

Ask yourself:
Where can you create five minutes of stillness?
Because even five minutes can anchor your whole day.

This time of year gets loud quickly — activities, errands, events, expectations. So I’m learning to protect small moments of peace: five minutes can do amazing things for my nervous system. I used to think I needed an entire hour to feel grounded, now I’m realizing five minutes done consistently can change my whole mood.

Where can you find tiny pockets of calm?

  1. Start Planning next year — this year

This season is a perfect time to set yourself up for success in the new year. Without putting any pressure on yourself, you can create space to design the business, life and experiences that would be meaningful for you in the new year.

So there are several things I do at the end of every year that help me design what I want to be, do and have in the next 12 months. This gives me clarity and a sense of calm. Here are the 5 things I do at the end of every year: (Be sure to listen to this week’s podcast to learn how to)

    • Reflection Time - What did this year teach me? What feels complete? What do I want more of? Who am I becoming?

  • Word of the Year - what single word resonates with me and aligns with what I wsn to attract into my life this coming year?

  • Personal Goals - now that my professional goals are set I create the list of personal goals that I want to achieve in areas of my life
  • Personal Growth Plan - What can I learn and/or experience that will help me grow into the person I need to be in order to accomplish my goals
  • Calendar Setting - I begin scheduling for the vacations and family time I intend to have first, then move on to scheduling the things in my personal growth plan because if it is a priority it needs to be on your calendar
  1. Celebrate What You’re Building — And Who You’re Becoming

Look around your life with gratitude and accomplishment for how far you have come. Look forward to your next chapter with excitement. And most important, let both be true.

Take time to be present and soak in the magic of the season.

December is the perfect bridge between who you’ve been and who you’re becoming — and you deserve to savor every bit of it.

So here’s my wish for you:
May this month be a beautiful blend of celebration and intention.
May your traditions fill your heart, and your goals fill your spirit.
And may you walk into the new year rooted, ready, and inspired.

You don’t have to choose between building your life… and living your life. You get to do both. And you get to enjoy both.

And I’m right there with you.
